Dental implants treatment is a procedure where the root of a missing tooth is replaced with metal posts (made of Titanium) and the natural teeth are replaced with the artificial ones. Often we lose a tooth or teeth during a mishap, accident or due to dental caries or gum problems. So in order to fill the gap, artificial teeth in form of bridges or dentures were used. Dental implants work as an alternative to the dentures or the bridgework. The metal post which is implanted in the foundation of the gums function like the natural root and once the tooth is placed on it you can so you can easily chew, bite and brush them up just like natural teeth.
Types of dental implants:
There are two types of dental implants that are often used by the dentists to fix and replace the teeth:
Endosteal implants – The endosteal implants are implanted directly into jawbone using the surgery. A second phase of surgery is required once the implant has bonded to the bone and finally the artificial tooth is attached to the metal post.
Subperiosteal implants – The subperiosteal implants come with metal frame that is attached to the jaw bone below the gum tissue and as the gum heals, they become permanently fixed to the jawbone.
Procedure to fit dental implants:
The dental implant surgery is mostly performed under local anesthesia. Most types of dental implants require 2 steps, In the 1st step the holes are drilled into the jawbone where the metal posts of the dental implants are fixed. Once the implants are fixed in the jawbones we have to waiting for the implant to get fixed to the bone, which takes around 3-6months.
After this healing is complete, in the 2nd step the artificial tooth is attached to dental implant through a metal connection.
